Fri, Nov 20: Pushkar, then to Udaipur

Mary and Paul were up before the crack of dawn for a ride back into Pushkar where they watched 11 hot air balloons being inflated.

They then piled into the basket one of the balloons and they were off on their first hot air balloon ride.

Our pilot is from Sri Lanka and lives year round in Pushkar.  Many of the other balloonists travel around to the various fairs.

The ride took us right by our hotel where our other travelers later indicated that they watched the balloons go by.

The pilot was required to maintain a pretty high altitude going over the camel fair as the livestock really don’t like the balloons.

After that he kept changing the altitude.  One time we were so low we clipped the top of a tree.  Other times we were more than 2000 feet high.

Even at fairly high altitudes we could hear dogs barking and cows mooing.  Sound carries very far at those altitudes.  When the balloon was lower we had people waving and smiling at us.  Among other things we saw marigold fields and rose fields.  A great ride.

We saw several balloons go down before we did.

We ended up landing in and dragging through a planted field and the farmer wasn’t too happy.  Our pilot was also unhappy as this was the first time in 3 years he had caused crop damage.  However, the tracking car quickly arrived and all was made good with the farmer, as the balloon company reimburses the farmers for any damage.  We attracted much of the neighborhood as well.  Everyone wanted to see the balloon up close.

More photos of Pushkar Fair and the Balloon Ride.

We then headed back for breakfast and the entire group then piled into the van for our drive to Udaipur.  Along the way we saw many business displaying large quantities of marble slabs.

It was nearly dark by the time we arrived in Udaipur.  The streets are narrow and the bus couldn’t get to our hotel.  We waited a bit for the hotel jeep and then decided to walk the distance instead.  It was only a 10 or 15 minute walk.

Our hotel is a heritage style hotel…built relatively recently but in the style of an old Haveli (mansion).

Jessica and Karen were in an older section of the hotel and had views of the lake.

After a short rest we walked a short distance to another hotel for dinner at their rooftop restaurant overlooking the lake.
